About the Catholic Liturgical Calendar

The liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church is the cycle of seasons and celebrations that determine when feast days are to be observed and which Scripture readings and prayers are to be used in the Mass.

Liturgical Seasons

  • Advent: A season of preparation for the birth of Christ (4 Sundays before Christmas)
  • Christmas: The celebration of Christ's birth (December 25) and the weeks following
  • Ordinary Time (first part): The weeks between Christmas and Lent
  • Lent: A 40-day period of fasting and penance, preparing for Easter
  • Easter: The celebration of Christ's Resurrection and the 50 days that follow
  • Ordinary Time (second part): The weeks after Pentecost until Advent begins again

Liturgical Colors

  • Green: Used during Ordinary Time, symbolizing hope and growth
  • Purple/Violet: Used during Advent and Lent, symbolizing penance and preparation
  • White/Gold: Used during Christmas and Easter, for feasts of the Lord, Mary, and saints who were not martyrs
  • Red: Used on Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Pentecost, and feasts of martyrs
  • Rose: Optional for the third Sunday of Advent and fourth Sunday of Lent

This calendar follows the General Roman Calendar as used by the Catholic Church worldwide, though local dioceses and countries may have additional celebrations or variations.
