Pope Leo XIV and AI

A pillar article on AI sermons, Catholic preaching, and responsible homily tools.

Pope Leo XIV's warning about AI sermons matters deeply to our mission. We receive it as a call to keep prayer, study, pastoral knowledge, and the priest's own faith at the center of preaching. Our full response explains why HomilyWriterAI is built as a research and preparation assistant, not an artificial preacher.

Meet the Builder

Seminarian Giuseppe Njualem

Catholic Seminarian, Diocese of St. Thomas | Founder of HomilyWriterAI

Giuseppe Njualem is a Catholic Seminarian for the Diocese of St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. By the grace of God and with guidance from friend priests and professors, he built HomilyWriterAI to support priests in their sacred ministry.

During his parish practice in Canada, Giuseppe was commissioned to write Sunday homilies and discovered firsthand the time-intensive nature of homily preparation—often spending over 3 hours researching commentaries, magisterial documents, and Church Fathers' writings. This inspired him to create a tool that would save priests valuable time while maintaining theological depth.

"I built HomilyWriterAI as a co-creator in the homily writing process—saving priests time for prayer and pastoral care while ensuring receptiveness to the Spirit's promptings."

Why it exists

Our Story

HomilyWriterAI began with a simple pastoral concern: priests carry a great deal, and good preaching deserves protected time, serious sources, and space for the Spirit.

HomilyWriterAI was born from a profound realization: many dedicated priests struggle to find time for homily preparation amidst their demanding pastoral responsibilities. Hospital visits, counseling sessions, administrative duties, and community outreach often leave little time for the thoughtful preparation of Sunday homilies.

We recognized that artificial intelligence, when guided by profound theological understanding, could serve as a powerful tool to support the Church's mission. Our founding team—a unique collaboration of Catholic theologians, seminary professors, and technology experts—came together with a shared vision: to create a tool that honors the dignity of priestly ministry while embracing the possibilities of modern technology.

Our journey began with extensive research into homiletics, scripture studies, and the practical needs of parish priests. We built HomilyWriterAI as a resource that respects the priest's role as shepherd while providing thoughtful, scripturally-grounded assistance when time is limited.

Purpose-built AI

Our Technology

HomilyWriterAI combines cutting-edge artificial intelligence with extensive theological datasets. Our system has been trained on thousands of homilies, Church documents, scriptural commentaries, and writings of the saints to ensure both theological depth and pastoral relevance.

Unlike generic AI tools, HomilyWriterAI understands the liturgical calendar, Catholic traditions, and the unique challenges of speaking to diverse parish communities. We've built a tool that respects the Church's rich homiletic tradition while embracing modern communication needs.

Every suggestion our system makes is designed to spark the priest's own reflection and creativity—never to replace it. The final homily always reflects the unique voice, experience, and pastoral insight of the individual priest.

The mission

Technology in service of preaching, not the other way around.

HomilyWriterAI is built for the priest who wants help gathering ideas, organizing a message, and saving time while remaining the true author, preacher, and pastor of the final homily.

Better preparation Support for Scripture, commentaries, themes, and structure.
More pastoral time Less blank-page pressure, more room for people and prayer.
Personal final voice Drafts are meant to be adapted, discerned, and preached personally.
Ongoing care

Our Commitment

HomilyWriterAI is built by a team committed to serving the Church through ethical use of technology. We believe that when properly directed, artificial intelligence can be a powerful tool for evangelization and pastoral support.

We continuously refine our system based on feedback from priests and theological advisors to ensure that HomilyWriterAI remains faithful to Catholic teaching while providing practical assistance to busy clergy.
